How to wash jumpers without pilling, shrinking or stretching
Quick answer: wash jumpers in cool water, inside out, squeeze gently without rubbing, press water out with a towel instead of wringing, then dry flat. Shrinking usually comes from hot water and rough handling; stretching from hanging it while heavy with water; pilling from friction with other items.
Why jumpers get damaged
| Problem | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Shrinking | Hot water, rough rubbing, hot tumble drying |
| Stretching | Hanging on a hanger while soaking wet |
| Pilling | Friction with jeans and zips; washing with rough items |
Hand-washing a jumper
- Turn it inside out.
- Dissolve detergent in a basin of cool water before adding the jumper.
- Soak 5–10 minutes, gently squeezing the collar and underarms. Don’t scrub or twist.
- Rinse 2–3 times in cool water at the same temperature.
- Press out water: roll it in a dry towel and press gently.
Machine washing (if the label allows)
- Put it inside out in a mesh bag.
- Choose the Wool or delicate programme, cool water and a low spin.
- Wash separately from jeans, items with metal zips and towels.
Drying
- Dry flat on a mesh rack or a dry towel, easing it back into shape.
- Keep it away from harsh sun and direct heat.
- Turn it over so it dries evenly; fold only when fully dry.
Already pilled?
Use a fabric shaver or de-pilling comb on the jumper laid flat. Next time, wash it inside out and separately to cut friction.
Choosing a detergent for jumpers
- Liquid, easy to dissolve and rinse, in a moderate dose.
- Wool and cashmere: follow the label; many brands recommend a dedicated wool detergent.
- Everyday acrylic or cotton knits: a gentle liquid 2-in-1 is enough. URA has a gentle formula for everyday hand washing, keeping clothes soft, with less pilling and better shape. For a small hand-wash basin, use less than the dose on the pouch.
