Clothes smell after months in the wardrobe: freshening your wardrobe and seasonal clothes
Quick answer: wardrobe and musty smells on stored clothes usually come from moisture and putting clothes away before they’re fully dry. Clothes that already smell: rewash and dry thoroughly. The wardrobe: wipe it out, air it and add moisture absorbers. Dry, clean clothes with a faint wardrobe smell: spray with fabric spray from 20–30cm before wearing.
Why stored clothes smell
- Put away damp, especially in humid seasons.
- Closed wardrobes against damp walls, rarely opened.
- Unwashed clothes stored with sweat and dust.
- Sealed plastic bags that trap moisture.
Dealing with clothes that smell
| How bad | What to do |
|---|---|
| Faint wardrobe smell, clean and dry | Air for a few hours, then fabric spray on dry fabric |
| Clearly musty | Rewash and dry thoroughly |
| Mould spots | Wash separately and treat per the care label; badly mouldy items may not recover |
When rewashing, add softener in the final rinse for a fresher scent, such as SPY Nature Care (50–100ml per 5–7kg).
Cleaning and keeping the wardrobe fresh
- Take everything out, wipe the wardrobe with a damp cloth, then dry it.
- Leave the doors open for a few hours.
- Add moisture absorbers in the corners and replace them when full.
- Move the wardrobe slightly away from the wall, especially damp walls.
- Don’t overfill it, so air can move.
Storing seasonal clothes
- Wash and dry completely before storing.
- Use breathable fabric bags rather than sealed plastic.
- Knits and thick coats: fold loosely and don’t stack heavy items on top.
- At the start of the season: air clothes before wearing.
When to use fabric spray
SPY Fabric Spray is for dry clothes with a faint wardrobe smell, and for coats, blankets and curtains you can’t wash often. Spray from about 20–30cm and wait a few seconds for the scent to settle. Three scents: Dream Violet, Pure White and Pink Whisper. For silk or leather, test on the inside first. Don’t spray damp clothes to cover a smell: the damp smell returns as the scent fades.
