Detergent for front-loading washing machines: which type, and how much?
Quick answer: a front-loading washing machine works well with a low-foam detergent, usually labelled “for front-loaders” or “Matic”, used at the dose printed on the pack. Regular detergent still works if you cut the dose, but it tends to make more foam.
Why do front-loaders need low-foam detergent?
The drum turns horizontally: clothes are lifted and dropped, so they are cleaned mainly by tumbling rather than soaking in lots of water. Because there is little water, excess foam causes problems:
- Foam cushions the clothes, reducing the tumbling action and cleaning power.
- Longer cycles: many machines detect foam and add extra rinses.
- Foam overflows into the detergent drawer or onto the floor.
- Soap residue builds up in the rubber door seal and starts to smell.
Choosing a detergent for your front-loader
- Read the label: look for “low foam”, “for front-loading machines” or “Matic”.
- Prefer liquid: it dissolves quickly in cold water and leaves less residue in the drawer and on fabric.
- Want one step fewer? Choose a 2-in-1 detergent that washes and softens at the same time.
For example, SPY Matic has two low-foam lines made for front-loaders:
- Ultra Clean Matic contains Sokalan to help stop dirt settling back on clothes.
- Deep Clean Matic washes and softens in one go, with no need for extra fabric softener.
How much is enough?
- Follow the dose on the pack. Each detergent has a different concentration, so there is no single number. For Deep Clean Matic, the pack recommends 50ml for 3–5 sets of clothes.
- Small or lightly soiled loads: use less.
- Heavily soiled loads: use a little more, or pour a small amount straight onto stains (collars, underarms) before washing.
- Don’t overdose. Extra detergent doesn’t clean better; it only adds foam and residue.
Which compartment does detergent go in?
The drawer of a front-loader usually has three compartments:
| Compartment | Usually marked | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-wash | “I” or “Pre-wash” | Only when you choose a pre-wash programme |
| Main wash | “II” or “Main wash” | Detergent |
| Softener | Flower symbol | Fabric softener |
Markings vary by brand, so check your machine’s manual. If you use a 2-in-1 detergent, pour it into the main wash compartment and leave the softener compartment empty.
Common mistakes
- Adding extra detergent “just in case”: foam overflows and clothes feel greasy or smell.
- Overloading the drum: clothes have no room to tumble. Leave some space at the top.
- Closing the door straight after washing: the seal stays damp and starts to smell. Leave the door ajar and wipe the seal dry.
- Never cleaning the drawer: detergent and softener residue builds up. Pull it out and rinse it in warm water now and then.
FAQ
Can I use top-loader detergent in a front-loader? Yes, if you reduce the dose as directed on the pack. If you still see lots of foam, cut it further or switch to a low-foam type.
Do I need fabric softener with a 2-in-1 detergent? Not necessarily. If you like a stronger scent, you can add softener to the softener compartment.
