Small pouch or big can of detergent: which size suits your home?
Quick answer: choose a small pouch if your household is small, you’re short on space or you’re trying a new scent. Choose a big can if your household is large, you wash daily and you already know the product. Either way, compare by number of washes rather than price per pack, and use it up before the expiry date.
At a glance
| Small pouch or can | Big can | |
|---|---|---|
| Suits | 1–2 people, rented rooms, small apartments | Families of 4+, daily washing |
| Trying a new scent | Easy, less waste if you don’t like it | Try a small pack first |
| Storage | Compact, easy to store | Needs a fixed spot near the machine |
| Pouring and measuring | Spouted pouch, light to handle | Heavy; decant into a smaller bottle |
| Restocking | More often | Less often |
How long does a can last?
Take SPY Ultra Clean Plus, dosed at 50–70ml for each 5–7kg load:
- At about 60ml per load, 1kg of detergent covers roughly 15 washes.
- One load a day: a 1.5kg pouch lasts about 3 weeks; a 5.2kg can about 2.5 months.
- 2–3 loads a week: a 5.2kg can can last 6–8 months.
These are rough estimates; actual use depends on how dirty clothes are and how you measure.
Tips for big cans
- Decant into a smaller bottle or an old small can for daily use; store the big can somewhere cool.
- Close the cap tightly after use and keep out of direct sunlight.
- Use the measuring cap rather than guessing: clean clothes with less waste.
- Check the expiry date on the pack. SPY detergents carry a 3-year shelf life from the production date.
