What is 2-in-1 laundry detergent, and do you still need fabric softener?
Quick answer: a 2-in-1 laundry detergent contains softening and fragrance ingredients as well as cleaning agents, so it washes and softens in the same cycle. For everyday clothes you don’t need separate fabric softener. If you like a stronger scent, you can add softener in the final rinse, but that’s a preference, not a requirement.
How does 2-in-1 detergent work?
A bottle of 2-in-1 detergent has two groups of ingredients:
- Cleaning agents (surfactants) that lift dirt and sweat.
- Softening and fragrance ingredients that make fibres softer and leave a scent after drying.
You add it once to the main wash compartment (machine) or to the basin (hand wash), with no need to add softener later.
How is it different from regular detergent?
| Regular detergent | 2-in-1 detergent | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes dirt | Yes | Yes |
| Softens fabric | Little or none | Yes |
| Scent after drying | Depends | Yes |
| Needs extra softener | Usually | Not necessarily |
In short: regular detergent only cleans, while 2-in-1 detergent also softens and adds scent in the same wash. Fabric softener does the opposite: it softens and adds fragrance but does not clean. See also: Can fabric softener replace detergent?
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| One step and one product fewer | Harder to mix and match detergent and softener scents |
| Suits busy households that machine-wash daily | Items that need extra softness (towels, duvets) may still benefit from softener |
| Easy dosing: one cap per load |
When to add fabric softener anyway
- You like a strong scent that lasts on bedding and curtains.
- Thick items that tend to stiffen, such as towels and duvets.
- Humid weather when clothes dry slowly indoors. A softener with mildew protection can help, such as SPY 5-in-1 Fabric Softener.
If you add it, pour it into the flower-shaped compartment (machine) or the final rinse (hand wash).
How much to use
Follow the pack. SPY’s 2-in-1 lines Ultra Clean, Ultra Clean Plus and Deep Clean Plus all recommend 50–70ml for each 5–7kg load.
Which one to choose
- SPY Ultra Clean: washes and softens in one step, with Sokalan to help stop dirt settling back on clothes.
- SPY Ultra Clean Plus: concentrated, in Golden Blossom and Blossom, no extra softener needed.
- SPY Deep Clean Plus: with Tinosan HP100 to help remove odours and Noverite to soften fibres. Good for clothes worn all day and sportswear.
- Front-loaders: choose a low-foam type such as SPY Matic. Deep Clean Matic is also 2-in-1.
