Long-lasting fabric softener scent: how to choose and use it
Quick answer: whether scent lasts on clothes depends on the type of softener (with or without scent-retaining technology), how you use it (right dose, in the final rinse) and how you dry and store clothes (airy spot, not too long in harsh sun, stored only when fully dry).
Choosing a softener: what to look for on the label
- Scent technology: some softeners contain scent beads that help fragrance last on fabric after drying.
- Scent family: floral, perfume-like or fresh. Choose by taste and season.
- Extra benefits: softness, colour care, mildew protection for humid weather.

Using it so the scent lasts longer
- Right dose: 50–100ml for each 5–7kg load, as directed on the pack. More doesn’t add much scent but does leave residue.
- Final rinse only: pour into the flower-shaped compartment, not the main wash. When hand washing, add it to the last rinse.
- Don’t rinse again with clean water after adding softener.
- Hang clothes straight after the cycle; don’t leave them wet in the drum.
Drying and storing
- Dry in an airy, shaded spot. Long periods in strong sun make scent fade faster and can fade dark colours.
- Bring clothes in as soon as they’re dry, rather than leaving them out for hours.
- Store only when fully dry, in a wardrobe that isn’t overcrowded.
- Humid weather: clothes dried slowly indoors can pick up a damp smell that overpowers fragrance. See Clothes smell musty after drying indoors.
