What are enzymes in laundry detergent, and how do they help?
Quick answer: enzymes in laundry detergent help break down organic stains such as milk, starch, food and sweat into smaller pieces that wash away more easily. Each enzyme “specialises” in one group of stains. Enzyme detergents suit baby clothes, food stains and everyday wear, but should be avoided on wool and silk.
Common enzymes
| Enzyme | Stains | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Protease | Protein-based | Milk, egg, sweat, blood |
| Amylase | Starch-based | Baby cereal, porridge, starchy sauces |
| Lipase | Fat-based | Cooking oil, butter, lipstick |
| Cellulase | Fabric fibres | Reduces fuzz so colours look fresher |
Not every detergent contains all of these. Check the ingredients on the label to see what the product uses.
Is “bio” detergent the same as enzyme detergent?
The word “bio” (sinh học in Vietnamese) is often used for detergents that contain enzymes. But brands don’t use the term consistently, so reading the ingredients is more reliable than reading the name.
Getting the most from enzyme detergent
- Treat stains early: milk and cereal are harder to remove once dry.
- Pour a little detergent straight onto the stain and leave it for a few minutes before washing.
- Soak heavily soiled items for about 15–30 minutes.
- Use cool or moderately warm water as directed on the pack. Very hot water can make enzymes less effective and set protein stains.
Fabrics to avoid
Wool and silk are protein fibres. Protease can affect them with regular use. For wool and silk, use a detergent made for them and follow the care label on the garment.
