Liquid detergent or washing powder for your washing machine?

Liquid detergent or washing powder for your washing machine?

Quick answer: if you machine-wash every day, have lots of coloured or delicate clothes, or use a front-loader, liquid detergent is more convenient: it dissolves fast, is easy to measure and leaves less residue. Washing powder still suits muddy workwear, items that need a long soak and hand washing. Many households use both for different loads.

When liquid detergent makes sense

  • Daily machine washing: it dissolves immediately, so no undissolved powder streaks on dark clothes.
  • Front-loaders: choose a low-foam type, see Detergent for front-loading washing machines.
  • Coloured, delicate and dark clothes: fewer white marks from undissolved powder.
  • One step fewer: a 2-in-1 detergent washes and softens at the same time.

When powder still works well

  • Workwear and football kit caked in mud that needs a long soak.
  • Hand washing in a big basin or soaking overnight.
  • If you’re used to it and wash in warm water so it dissolves well.

Tips for using liquid detergent

  1. Use the dose on the pack. For example, SPY Ultra Clean Plus recommends 50–70ml for each 5–7kg load.
  2. Pre-treat stains: pour a little detergent onto collars and underarms, wait a few minutes, then wash.
  3. Wash whites separately. If whites look dull, try a detergent made for whites such as SPY Super White, which contains Tinopal to help whites look brighter.
  4. Don’t overload the drum so clothes can move freely.

FAQ

Is liquid detergent more expensive than powder? It depends. Concentrated liquid detergent uses only a small amount per wash, so compare the cost per wash, not just the price per can or bag.

Should I mix liquid detergent and powder in one wash? No need. Mixing doesn’t clean better; it only adds foam and residue. Pick the one that suits that load.
