Why isn't my fabric softener draining from the drawer? Causes and step-by-step fixes
Quick answer: softener usually stays in the drawer because of built-up residue, a siphon cap that’s out of place or blocked, softener that’s too thick or filling above the MAX line. Most cases can be fixed at home: rinse the drawer in warm water, refit the cap firmly, dilute thick softener and stay below MAX.
How the softener compartment works
In the final rinse, the machine pumps water into the softener compartment (the one with the flower symbol). The water level rises and pushes the softener through a small tube with a cap (the siphon) into the drum. If residue blocks this path, the cap is out of place or the softener is too thick, it stays in the drawer.
5 common causes
- Hardened softener residue in the drawer and around the cap, especially if it’s rarely cleaned.
- A siphon cap that’s misaligned, loose or missing after cleaning.
- Very thick, concentrated softener that can’t flow through the small tube in time.
- Overfilling above MAX: softener may drain too early during the wash, or the compartment may not work properly.
- Weak water flow into the drawer: low water pressure or a dirty inlet valve filter.
Step-by-step fix
- Remove the drawer: most machines have a release tab in the middle; press it and pull (see your manual).
- Take off the siphon cap in the softener compartment and soak the drawer and cap in warm water for 15–20 minutes.
- Scrub off residue with a small brush or old toothbrush, paying attention to small gaps and the siphon tube.
- Wipe the drawer housing inside the machine, where residue and mould tend to collect.
- Refit the siphon cap firmly and push the drawer in until it clicks.
- Test with a rinse cycle and no clothes: pour a little clean water into the softener compartment and check it drains completely.
Preventing it next time
- Don’t fill above MAX in the softener compartment.
- Dilute thick softener with a little water before pouring, if your machine’s manual recommends it.
- Clean the drawer regularly, about once a month.
- Use the right dose from the pack. For example, SPY Nature Care and SPY 5-in-1 Fabric Softener both recommend 50–100ml for each 5–7kg load.
- To skip a step, use a 2-in-1 detergent and leave the softener compartment empty. See: What is 2-in-1 laundry detergent?
Still not draining?
Check the filter at the end of the inlet hose (where the tap connects to the machine) for blockages. If water still flows weakly or not at all into the drawer, the inlet valve may be faulty; contact your washing machine maker’s service centre.
