What determines contract manufacturing prices for laundry detergent? 6 factors to know before asking for a quote
Ask several factories “how much to manufacture laundry detergent?” and you may get quite different quotes. That’s because the price is built from many factors; there’s no single figure. Here are the six main ones.
1. Formula: existing or custom
- OEM (existing formula): uses a formula the factory already produces; lower cost, faster to market.
- ODM (custom formula): developed for your brand positioning; needs extra time for testing and samples.
2. Concentration and ingredients
Concentrated detergents, and those with softeners (2-in-1 wash and soften), enzymes or odour-control ingredients, have different raw material costs from a basic formula.
3. Fragrance
Fragrance is a significant part of the price. Fragrances from major fragrance houses, strong or long-lasting scents, or a custom-developed scent usually cost more.
4. Packaging and labels
- Pack type: bottle, can, pouch; volume; with or without pump, measuring cap.
- Stock packaging or custom design (a custom bottle mould adds cost).
- Labels: paper labels, shrink sleeves or direct printing.
- Cartons and packing method.
5. Volume per order
The larger the volume, the lower the cost per unit, because set-up, line cleaning and testing costs are spread over more units. Each factory has its own minimum order quantity for each product and pack size.
6. Extra services
Sample making, design support, help with product documentation, warehousing, delivery… depending on the agreement, these may be charged separately or included.
What to prepare for the most accurate quote
When you contact a factory, send:
- Product type: laundry liquid, 2-in-1 laundry liquid, fabric softener…
- Positioning: economy, mid-range or premium; which sales channels.
- Specifications: volume, pack type, number of scents.
- Expected volume for the first order and per month.
- Reference samples (if any) for scent, thickness, colour.
