The Covid-19 pandemic was a stress test for the market. Businesses with lean, efficient operations, quality products and trusted brands were the most likely to weather the storm.

When news about Covid-19 and daily case and death counts stopped dominating the media, life returned to its usual rhythm. Students went back to school, markets were busy again, and grocery stores no longer had quarantine signs strung outside. Only then did businesses begin to restart production. Many had to spend heavily on refurbishing facilities, clearing expired stock and rehiring staff.

A representative of Komlife Vietnam, maker of the SPY laundry detergent brand, said that for the previous two years the Komlife factory in Hung Yen had run at reduced capacity, with rotating shifts because of social distancing orders. At times goods could not be delivered to provincial distributors. The pandemic forced many large partners to close or change business, and the company lost a significant number of customers.

“Despite the difficulties, our factory staff encouraged each other to get through it. Restarting production quickly and reconnecting the supply chain was the only way for the business to keep up with the market.”

Many consumers are now tightening their belts after Covid. The risk of inflation has pushed up the prices of essentials such as food and fuel, and weaker demand is a major challenge for businesses.

The Komlife Vietnam representative added: “With raw materials from abroad all becoming more expensive and harder to get, rising production costs push up product prices. We chose a different path: sticking with traditional sales and cutting media spending to hold our retail prices. It is a big effort, and it shows that we understand and share our customers’ situation.”

SPY has also kept improving its products, launching SPY Ultra Clean laundry detergent with softener with more cleaning ingredients to keep clothes bright. For customers who travel often, SPY offers a convenient 50ml sachet that is easy to carry.

The SPY brand also says it fully funds the refurbishment and installation of new shop signs for grocery stores in its distribution network.

Having come through hard times, the SPY brand is working every day to restore its business, keep innovating and improving its products, and raise its customer service to win back market share after the pandemic. It is a difficult period, but also a big opportunity for the business to grow.
